What is Watch Together?
Powered by Sceenic, Watch Together unlocks the ability to consume events with friends in a virtual room with camera and microphone support. Share the excitement, create rooms, invite friends, and co-view synchronized live and video-on-demand (VOD) content.
Watch Together enhances the DIVA Player experience, helping to increase user engagement and encourage app retention.
Getting started with Watch Together
The steps documented below explain a typical user flow for setting up and entering Watch Together mode.
Step 1: Enter Watch Together mode
Select the button in the top right-hand corner of the screen to enter Watch Together mode.
Watch Together button:
Step 2: Enable camera and microphone access
When setting up Watch Together for the first time, users must enable access to the device camera and microphone using the button in the panel. If you've already set permissions up, jump straight to step 3: Lobby.
Note: the permissions dialog presents differently depending on the browser/device in use.
Safari browser permissions example:
- Select 'Allow' to grant access to the device camera and microphone.
Users are then automatically taken to the lobby to create or join a room.
If users choose to deny access, they cannot proceed, and an error message displays. Repeat step 2: enable camera and microphone access to progress to the lobby.
Step 3: Lobby
Users reach the lobby once camera and microphone permissions are enabled. The lobby automatically displays the user's camera with the microphone unmuted. In the lobby, users can create a room, join a room, and adjust room controls.
Permission granted to camera and microphone:
Step 3a: Create a Watch Room
- With the Create tab in focus, select the
button. Upon creation, users are taken straight to the Watch Room and a Watch Room invite code is generated.
- Select the
button to copy the Watch Room invite code. This invite code is now ready to be shared with friends – sit back and wait for them to join you in the Watch Room.
Step 3b: Join a Watch Room
If you receive an invite code to a Watch Room, follow the steps below:
Note: you must have an active subscription or entitlement to the integrated app.
- Copy the invite code to your clipboard.
- Select the
button in DIVA Player to enter Watch Together mode.
- New users must complete step 2: enable camera and microphone access before proceeding.
4. Select the Join tab.
5. Select to use the code copied to the clipboard, or manually enter the invite code.
6. Select the button (activates upon entering invite code). Users are taken to the associated Watch Room.
Step 4: Watch Together with friends
Welcome to the Watch Room! Sit back and enjoy synchronized content with others.
Above is an example of a Watch Room with the maximum of four participants per room. Available in portrait or landscape mode (on mobile and tablet), view the video player alongside Watch Room participants in the panel.
When joining a room, the camera and microphone are active by default, however, participants can mute themselves and turn off their camera using the room controls.
The panel contains video tiles representing each participant in the room. Video tiles are ordered by most recently joined at the top in landscape view, or the top-left in portrait view. Usernames display in the bottom-left corner of the tile.
Anyone in the Watch Room can pause or seek forward/backward through the video stream like normal, however, in Watch Together mode, playback actions affect all participants in the room – everyone always views the same moment of the event.
Room for one more?
Watch Rooms with less than the maximum of four participants display the button in the panel. All participants, including guests and the host, can copy the invite code to share with friends.
Watch Room controls
Room controls found within the panel give participants the option to switch their cameras on/off, mute/unmute their microphones, adjust room volume, and leave the room.
Watch Room volume
Control the volume of the room participants separately to the volume of the video stream.
Note: on Android devices, select the volume button to mute/unmute the room participants. Use the device volume buttons to manage sound levels.
On desktop, hover over the volume button to display the slider. Select the volume button to mute/unmute.
On iOS, tap the volume button to display the volume slider. Mute the room volume by dragging the slider to the left.
Video tile states
Camera and microphone enabled example:
This is typically what a video tile looks like upon joining a Watch Room. The camera and microphone are both enabled.
Microphone muted example:
When a participant mutes their microphone, a red crossed out microphone icon displays at the bottom-right corner of the video tile.
Camera switched off example:
When participants switch their cameras off, their first two initials display in the centre of the video tile.
Participants with two-string usernames e.g., 'Michael Scott' display the first character of each 'MS'.
Participants with one-string usernames e.g., 'Oyster' display the first two characters' OY'.
Speaking highlight example:
When a participant speaks, a yellow border displays around the participant's video tile for everyone else in the room.
