This article introduces Automatic highlights in DIVA.
Topics covered here:
- What are Automatic highlights?
- Which content types support Automatic highlights?
- How are Automatic highlights populated?
- What highlight variants are available?
What are Automatic highlights?
Automatic highlights on DIVA allow users to catch up on and review the most significant moments of an event, e.g., a goal, a penalty, or a red card, to name a few. Automatic highlights can help increase engagement and repertoire, allowing users to choose the type of highlights variant they consume based on the video stream state. For example, video-on-demand (VOD) content can provide short, medium, and long variants, whereas Live DVR provides Live highlights (variant titles are configurable).
Highlight variants are reels of key clips automatically grouped together from an event. Users enter a unique viewing experience called Highlight's mode, upon selecting a Highlight's variant.
Which content types support Automatic highlights?
Highlights on DIVA are available for Live and VOD content. Push engine timeline events are required, in addition to specific highlight content for the video stream.
On Responsive web and WebTV platforms, DIVA uses all the PlaybyPlay events (both timeline events and commentary events).
How are Automatic highlights populated?
DIVA generates highlight variants, short, medium, and long, by filtering PlaybyPlay events (timeline and commentary events) defined as part of the particular variant.
What highlight variants are available?
DIVA supports the following Highlight variants:
- Live during Live DVR (Live Highlight variant in real-time)
- Short, medium, and long for VOD (including Live transitioned to VOD)
To understand how DIVA's Highlight functionality works for Live and VOD content, see examples of the different Highlight modes, and learn how Highlights are populated, select an accordion below:
Note: DIVA TV 5.3 supports Android TV, WebTV, tvOS, and Roku. From DIVA 5.9 on Android TV and 5.8 on Roku, the highlight duration is customizable via the Settings file.
Automatic highlights functionality works differently on DIVA big screens than on DIVA small screens. This section covers the following on DIVA big screens:
- How are Highlights accessed?
- What are Highlight variants?
- What does a Highlights video list look like?
- How are Highlights promoted?
- Jump to the next Highlight clip
- Exit Highlight's mode
How are Automtic highlights accessed?
Given Automatic highlights are enabled by an integrator, display Highlights related to the current video in the following ways:
- If Automatic highlights are available immediately (for on-demand content), the highlights video list displays at the bottom of the screen when the video loads into the player.
- Via highlight promotion, meaning when highlights become available, the peeking highlights video list displays at the bottom of the screen.
- As part of the available video lists within the End-of-Play mode, if enabled, after the current video has ended.
The Automatic highlights video list is dynamic, meaning highlighted content only displays within DIVA Player when at least one highlight variant becomes available.
For users who may be joining a stream part-way through, if available, the highlights video list briefly shows on screen immediately after a video fully loads in the player. This behavior ensures highlights are presented to users, providing the option to catch up on missed key moments.
What are Automatic highlight variants?
For each video that contains timeline events, an integrator can define one or multiple highlight variants. Each highlights variant is defined by the specific event types (highlight clips) that make up the highlights reel. For example, a football match could provide a short highlights reel with clips of scored goals. The same football match could also provide a full highlights reel with all the marked timeline events, such as goals, fault cards, player replacements, etc.
Each individual highlights variant is distinguishable based on its total duration (the cumulative duration of all included event types within a given video).
What does a highlights video list look like?
A highlights video list on DIVA TV displays a video list title, e.g., Match Highlights, and relevant video cards titled short, medium, or long. A badge indicator displays in the top-left corner of the video card, and the highlight reel duration is visible in the top-right-hand corner of the video card. When a highlight is playing, the badge replaces the highlights badge.

How are highlights promoted?
When highlights become available for the first time during a video, or if newly highlighted content is available, they're promoted to the end user. If DIVA Player is in full-screen mode, meaning no DIVA UI is in use, and no advertisements are running, the behavior is as follows:
WebTV, Android TV, and Roku specifics:
When consuming content, as the first highlighted clip becomes available, the Match Highlights button displays on screen (in focus) above the peeking highlights video list (displays for 3 seconds and disappears if not interacted with). Selecting the Match Highlights button focuses on the first video list card (short highlights reel). From here, users can choose to view the highlights reel.
